Now that you have found the storage facility, you are ready to move all your stuff in right? Before you do, let’s go over a few things that may make your experience a little better. First, think about what you’re storing and for how long. Will anything need special packing or special attention as it sits in storage? Maybe you have wood furniture that will be sitting for a long time. It may be smart to throw some wood preserver oil on that furniture. If you have digital files or vinyl records, you want a temperature controlled unit.
As you start packing your items remember that these items will be shifting during the move to the storage facility and then again when you take them out of the storage facility. Be sure to tape those boxes securely, so they won’t break apart. As you’re packing your items, use plenty of bubble wrap, packing paper, and blankets.
Packing and Storage Tips
- Take a list of what you will be storing, so the manager can help you accurately determine the storage space you need.
- Make a plan of the unit and how your items will be arranged. Leave an aisle in the center for easy access to the rear.
- Never store food or items that attract pests and for your safety, never store hazardous materials, such as flammable liquids.
- Use the full height to take advantage of your storage space. Shelving will help organize your space.
- Label boxes on all sides. Keep a list that details contents.
- Store frequently used items near the front.
- Fill boxes to avoid tipping or crushing when stacked with the heaviest on bottom.
- Disassemble tables, bed frames, cabinets, etc. Wrap and label accordingly for easy assembly at a later date.
- Make sure all appliances are clean and dry before storage. Wedge refrigerator and freezer doors ajar.
- Store couches on end, chairs seat to seat, and tables upside down with legs pointing up. Use dust covers/bed sheets to cover.
- Mirrors, records, and flat items should be stored on end, not flat. Books should be stored flat and in small boxes.
- Clothing and drapes should be stored hanging inside wardrobes. Use drawers in dressers to store delicate items.
When you get to your storage facility, take a moment to look at the space you are working with and the items you need to store. It’s almost like a game of Tetris. As you start moving items into your storage unit, place the heavier and bulky items towards the floor and the rear of the unit. Keep packing your unit, fitting things as close as you can to your other items to maximize your space. As you move your items in, create an aisle to the rear of the unit. This will help in case you ever need one item in the back of the unit later. Keep those labels facing out toward the door or the aisle.
Finally, when you get it all packed in the storage unit, place a strong secure lock on the door. We usually recommend the disc locks because they prevent bolt cutters from getting around the lock bar.
