SELF-STORAGE TIPS

July 14, 2020 By Don Gracia

Create an 18” wide aisle down the middle of your unit. This way you can get to every box with minimal effort.

Place items you are most likely to need at the front of the unit.

You expose your items to moisture when you move in or open the door when it is raining. (See temperature inversion). You must return later and open door for several hours.

Using sturdy boxes or plastic containers to store items:

This allows for stacking at least four high.

Stack heavier boxes on the bottom.

Seal boxes with tape to keep out dust.

Fill boxes or include space filler so boxes will not crush.

Pack heavier items in smaller boxes and lighter items in bigger boxes.

Large and extra-large boxes generally require 2 people to pick-up /carry.

Books should be stored in small or medium boxes which are sealed with tape. Books naturally attract mold.

Do not store book boxes directly on the concrete floor.

Label all boxes and containers so you can more efficiently retrieve items.

Use bubble wrap, newspaper, blankets, and towels to fill empty space inside boxes to prevent items from breaking or chipping.

Use blankets, sheets, or plastic covers made for storage to cover sofas and couches. Regular thick plastic holds moisture.

Vacuum sofas and couches before storage. Small amounts of food will attract insects and mice.

Cover mattresses with plastic covers before moving. If dropped or dragged the mattresses won’t get dirty.

Seal the end of mattress cover before storing with tape.

Disassemble lamps, chairs, tables, etc. so they take up less room in storage. (See “How Much Storage Do I Really Need?” to help determine how big a unit you need.)

If you are concerned about items being on the cement floor, use pallets.

Mirrors and glass should always be wrapped in a blanket and stored vertically.

Clean appliances and empty refrigerators. No one likes moving into a new space with “old” dirt.

To avoid late payment, sign up for automatic credit card deduction.

July 9, 2020 By Don Gracia

If you’re wondering what to do with all that extra stuff that you’re not using this season…or ever, you should probably consider using a self-storage unit to pile them away in. It may seem like a big venture, and depending on what you want to store, it maybe just that. But, it’s a really good idea to invest in. We’ll show you.

Rent a self-storage unit because it’s a great option for de-cluttering your home. You can free up quite a lot of space in your home when you get all that extra stuff into a new location. You won’t have to throw them all away, give them all away or sell them all. It’s also a great place to store your seasonal items away until you need them again the next season.

Rent a self-storage unit because it’s a secure option for storing your belongings. All your items, particularly the valuable ones are going to be safe, as there are locks and security cameras in the storage facility’s compounds.

Rent a self-storage unit because it’s very affordable, especially in relation to the size of the unit and what kind of features you may want in yours. You may even be able to work out some deals from the storage facilities too.

Rent a self-storage unit because it’s very durable. This is particularly good for you if you’re living in an area which is prone to bad weather or has a harsh climate. That way, your self-storage unit keeps your items very safe from the elements.

Rent a self-storage unit because it can brighten your mood. Believe it or not, but the less cluttered your environment, the less annoyed, agitated, stuffy or under-the-weather you and your family will see.

5 Great Reasons to Put Your Belongings into Self Storage

July 1, 2020 By Don Gracia

  1. If you are moving into another house or apartment. Self storage can make the transition from one home to another easier. It can be especially helpful if your new home is smaller than your first, or if you don’t want to move some of your older belongings into your new space.
  2. If you want to de-clutter your living environment. Sometimes our lives do become overwhelming – literally – and our homes can quickly become cluttered with all the things we have been collecting over time. De-cluttering can help you uncover space you forgot you had, can help improve the comfort of your home and make your space feel lighter and more enjoyable to be in. Self storage gives you the option of putting prized belongings somewhere safe and out of the way.
  3. If you are a traveler. Self storage offers peace of mind for travelers who are always on the move and do not necessarily have a permanent home. Self storage offers the convenience of flexibility and safety for these persons.
  4. If you run a home business. If you are running a home business that has stock, you know that keeping your business merchandise, supplies, and equipment in a secure, organized and designated location can be a challenge. Self storage offers one solution for home-based businesses that do not utilize retail space or an office location outside of the home.
  5. If you have seasonal storage needs. These can range from gardening tools and equipment to holiday decorations, things we usually pack away for months at a time until they are needed again. Self storage is an option for these kinds of seasonal needs.

How to Make the Most of Your Self-Storage Unit

June 24, 2020 By Don Gracia

Learn How to Make the Most of Your Self-Storage Unit

There are numerous reasons why people use self-storage units. These units may be used by people who are getting ready to move to a new home. Although they’re moving to a new place, they may have too much stuff on their hands at the moment and need a place to put it for the time being. As a result, they might decide to head over to somewhere like Providence Self Storage and then store the items away until they’re going to need them again.

The Many Reasons to Use a Self-Storage Unit

Moving isn’t the only reason people decide to use self-storage units. Some people are tired of dealing with a major clutter in their homes. They may have collected a lot of different items over the years and are now feeling overcrowded in their homes. They may decide to pack up some items they’re not currently using and store them for later use because it’s convenient to have access to belongings when they need them.

Those who’ve recently decided to divorce often use self-storage units. As their lives are changing, they may need a safe place to put certain belongings. Rather than store their stuff at the homes of their friends and family members, they could simply rent out a unit and start filling it up with their belongings. The great thing about renting out a self-storage unit is that you can use it for as long as you need it with no rush to collect your belongings.

How to Make the Most of the Space You Have

If you’re going to rent out a self-storage unit, you may want to make sure you’re able to make the most of all the space you have available. There are some simple packing techniques that are known for saving space and making it easier for you to find what you need when going back to the storage unit for something specific.

Instead of using cardboard boxes for your belongings, use plastic storage bins that come with lids. You can place books, clothes, and other important accessories inside of these bins and then seal them shut with the lid to protect them from dirt, dust. Place a label on each storage bin that tells you exactly what is inside of it so that you know ahead of time and don’t have to go rummaging through everything to get one item.

Make sure you’re stacking certain items to make the most of your space. Plastic storage bins would fit perfectly on tables, chairs, and other furniture you may choose to store. If you’re storing a large piece of furniture, such as a couch, make sure to store it vertically so that it’s not taking up too much space in the storage unit.

There are plenty of good reasons to use a self-storage unit. If you’re tired of the clutter, moving to a new home, or simply need a spot to put certain items, the self-storage unit is a great choice. Make sure you’re packing your belongings wisely and storing them properly to make the most of the space that is provided.

Packing Your Storage Unit

June 17, 2020 By Don Gracia

Now that you have found the storage facility you are ready to move all your stuff in right? well before you do, let’s go over a few things that may make your experience a little better. First all think about what your storing and for how long. Will anything need special packing, or special attention as it sits in storage? maybe you have wood furniture that will be sitting for a long time, It may be smart to throw some wood preserver oil on that furniture. If you have digital file, vinyl records, etc maybe you need a temperature controlled unit.

As you start packing your items remember that these items will be shifting during the move to the storage facility and then again when you take them out of the storage facility. Be sure to tape those boxes securely so they won’t break apart. Also as you’re packing your items use plenty of bubble wrap, packing paper, blankets, etc…

When you get to your storage facility take a moment to look at the space your working with and the items you need to store. It’s almost like a game of Tetris. As you start moving item into your storage unit, place the heavier and bulky items towards the floor and the rear of the unit. keep packing your unit fitting things as close as you can to your other items to maximize your space. As you move your items in, create a pathway or and isle to the rear of the unit. This will help in case you ever need one item in the back of the unit later. Keep those labels facing out toward the door or the isle.

Finally when you get it all packed in the storage unit good, place a strong secure lock on that door. Usually the disc locks are the ones that we recommend. They prevent bolt cutters from getting around the lock bar.
